I politely disagree, Kam. I don't see sexuality as a political issue. I'd compare it with introducing a black/Asian character. Soaps have black/Asian characters because it would be discriminatory not to when we live in a country with people of all colours. The non-white characters in Eastenders, for example, weren't put there by some political group, they're there because they are a part of the real world and it'd be bizarre and, potentially, discriminatory, not to have them. it would be creating a false all-white world that didn't reflect reality.
Gay people might not be so visible, but they are everywhere and part of the real world too.
I've got a particular interest in gay role models for young people as I believe that not seeing LGBT people on TV, etc, leads to ignorance and fear for those who aren't LGBT, and confusion and even self-hate for those 10% (very, very roughly) of people who are gay.
Hollyoaks frequently has gay storylines and it's not even mentioned in the UK press.
Also, it wouldn't be children being 'told one side of the story' because the 'story' as I see it is that the world is a wonderful variety of people of all colours and different sexualities, and by showing only straight people, you ARE only telling half the story.
And, as a lesbian myself, I don't consider who I love to be a moral issue in any way whatsoever. Whether I'm a 'good person' or not is in no was affected by whom I love.
It will be nice when we leave behind the old ways - the racial discrimination, the discrimination against women, the discrimination against LGBT people - and see everyone as a human being of equal value. We're all different, but we're all equal.

Not everyone agrees that same sex relationships are right, and I think this is the main issue here.
Introducing a lesbian story line is like introducing a strong (biased) political point of view.
I think that those who are not supportive of this story line want to know that their children (teens and younger) can watch popular tv and not be told only one side of the story, so to speak, about moral (& political) issues that everyone does not agree on. I think that's a fair call-no matter what you believe.

Introducing a lesbian story line is like putting a strong (biased) political view point across. Those who don't support the introduction of such a story line into prime time viewing (and to young people and teens), want to know that their children can watch popular tv without being strongly influenced one way or another on controversial moral (& political) issues.
And I personally think that's a fair call.

Not the first time Home and Away have a "lesbian" thing going... Gypsy Nash was sexually confused and kissed her lesbian friend Simone about 8 or 9 years ago...

I think that Sky kiss was the last time I watched Home and Away - must have a look when this story starts! I don't get the fuss about the storyline. I note that papers say some people might think it 'risque' :

I don't see why it would be any more risque than an interracial kiss in the 21st century. Many of the young viewers will be gay anyway, so why would it affect them? It would help everyone to see that people love all kinds of other people and it's no big deal.
P.S - You can vote in a poll about it on that news page above.
